Wheelz is a mobile- and web-enabled peer-to-peer car sharing company specifically designed to meet the needs of college and corporate communities by connecting users who own cars with potential renters who need short-term transportation. The model empowers vehicle owners to earn money from their car when they are not using it while providing convenient and affordable access for borrowers to obtain the vehicle they need for any occasion, including errands, shopping excursions, dates and weekend trips.
The Wheelz platform facilitates car sharing through a user-friendly registration and reservation process. After potential renters login using their Facebook account and consent to a driving record check, they can select a vehicle from a variety of characteristics (including make/model and location) and make an immediate reservation. Upon arriving at the vehicle, users gain access by using either the Wheelz app, a proximity card, or by obtaining assistance from the Wheelz Pit Crew, all made capable by non-intrusive Wheelz hardware that is installed in the vehicle. During the reservation period, drivers are provided with insurance and the vehicle owner’s policy remains unaffected. The entire process is designed to be frictionless, convenient, and secure.
Wheelz initially launched on the Stanford University campus and is currently quickly expanding into new college and corporate campuses. Wheelz provides numerous benefits to society (including lower carbon emissions and reduced traffic congestion), and it is well positioned to benefit from the growing “sharing economy” as more people seek to monetize their otherwise idle assets.
